A tender is hereby opened for the award of one Postdoctoral Fellowship under COOLBRAIN – CHIPLET COOLING SOLUTIONS FOR LOW-CONSUMPTION EMBEDDED PROCESSING AI AT NANOSCALE (HORIZON-EU-) of University of Aveiro / DETI under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area Condensed Matter Physics, Light-Matter Interaction, Radiative Heat Transfer.

3. Admission Requirements: Doctor Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Physical Engineering, or a related field. 2

4. Other Requirements:

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Physical Engineering, or a related field. The candidate should demonstrate a strong background in multiphysics modeling, spanning areas of electromagnetics, metamaterials, radiative heat transfer, and semiconductor physics.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Strong background in multidisciplinary theoretical and applied physics, including solid state physics and light-matter interactions, electromagnetics of metamaterials, physics of radiative heat transfer, and multiphysics simulation methods
  • Solid expertise in electromagnetic modeling of nanostructured media such as metamaterials and metasurfaces, particularly at infrared frequencies
  • Experience in analytical and numerical modeling of near-field radiative heat transfer and thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems based on such systems
  • Experience with semiconductor device modeling, especially TPV cells involving low-bandgap and III‑V semiconductors
  • Scientific publication record relevant to the topic of the project

5. Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if they had obtained a doctorate less than three years prior and comply with no. 2 of article 2, of the Research Fellow Statute in the wording given by Decree‑Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, and also the provisions of article 8 of the Scientific Research Grant Regulations of the University of Aveiro. PDFs can only be granted provided the following requirements are met cumulatively:

  • The doctorate has been obtained within the three years prior to the date of submission of the application for the grant;
  • The postdoctoral research is carried out in a host entity different from the entity where the research work leading to the doctoral degree was carried out;
  • The research activities do not require postdoctoral experience;
  • The research activities have a time frame for development and implementation of three years or less;
  • The fellow does not exceed, with the conclusion of the grant contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of three years in that type of grant, consecutive or interpolated.

6. Work plan: The project focuses on investigation and modeling of the super‑Planckian radiative heat transfer (RHT) and low‑temperature thermophotovoltaic (TPV) energy conversion phenomena assisted by nanostructured materials and III‑V semiconductors. The selected researcher will develop analytical and numerical models for near‑field RHT between closely spaced nanostructured media, including metamaterials, metasurfaces, carbon nanotube arrays, and metallic and semiconductor nanostructures.

The work will include the modeling and optimization of super‑Planckian RHT in such systems and the related energy recycling and photoelectric conversion mechanisms. Particular emphasis will be placed on the electromagnetic and thermal modeling of low‑bandgap semiconductor TPV systems and on the optimization of emitter–receiver geometries to enhance heat transfer and conversion efficiency.

The researcher will also contribute to the development of multiphysics simulation frameworks combining electromagnetic, thermal, and semiconductor device models, supporting the design of advanced energy harvesting solutions integrated at chip level.

7. Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellow Statute, as amended by Decree‑Law No. 123/2019, of August 28th; Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, Regulation No. 292/2020, published in Diário da República No. 61, Series II, of March 26th; Decree‑Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).

8. Workplace: The work will be carried out at Dept. of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Professor/Doctor Stanislav Maslovski.

9. Duration of the grant: The grant duration will be 6 (six) months, starting in July of 2026, and may be renewed for additional periods, up to the maximum limit of approved funding. Under no circumstances shall it exceed the limits defined in no. 5 of article 8, of Regulation no. 292/2020, of February 28th, published in Diário da República, no. 61, Series II, of March 26th (Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro).

10. Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1.901,00, according to the table of values of monthly maintenance allowances, set out in Appendix III of the Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, subject to any updates that may occur and are applicable. The fellow may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security, in case of adherence to this plan.

11. Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be the following: (i) overall evaluation of the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae; (ii) assessment of previous relevant experience, including participation in research projects and scientific publications; and (iii) an interview, with the respective value of (i) Curriculum Vitae – 60%; (ii) relevant experience – 30%; (iii) interview – 10%, with the final score expressed on a scale from 0 to 20. The selection panel reserves the right to waive the interview stage if a final decision can be reached based on the Primeira two criteria.

13. Deadline for applications (not be less than 10 working days) and how to Submeter Candidaturas: The call is open from 20‑05‑2026 to 02‑06‑2026, and only applications submitted within the deadline will be admitted.

Applications must be formalized by sending a letter of application accompanied by the following documents: Certificate of qualifications with any supporting documents deemed relevant, a detailed Curriculum Vitae with information relevant to the selection criteria outlined above, and letter(s) of reference. They shall also indicate the e‑mail address to which by such indication they accept to be notified for all purposes within this procedure.

14. Form of publication/notification of results: The results of the evaluation shall be made public no later than 60 working days after the closing date for submission of applications and shall be notified to the applicants. The candidates are informed, in a prior hearing, under the terms established in the Code of Administrative Procedure, of the probable meaning of the final decision, and may, within 10 working days of this notification, express their opinion on this decision. The final results may be appealed to the Rector, to be submitted within 10 working days from the respective notification.

15. Tender duration: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until 31‑12‑2026 for the purpose of constituting a reserve list for selection.

Note: If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of article 25 of Decree‑Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher education institutions, and of paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree‑Law no. 60/2018, of August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act.
