AmpliAqua® is a pre-commercial innovation unit for sustainable and circular aquaculture, based in Nazéré, Portugal. Our facility integrates Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), bioponic production, and microalgae cultivation into a single, interconnected IMTA system. We support fish farmers and agri-food startups in transitioning to circular, economically viable production models — and we are building the digital and biological tools to make that transition possible at scale. We are a small, hands-on team where every person has real impact.

AmpliAqua® is in a phase of consolidation and growth of its biotechnological production activities, focusing on microalgae, bioprocesses, and biological solutions for agricultural and environmental application. In this context, we seek to reinforce the operational team in Nazéré with an on-site technical profile focused on the daily execution of fermentation processes and the production of bacterial and fungal inocula.

The Role

We are looking for a Bioreactor Technician to own the day-to-day operation of our fermentation bioreactors, producing bacterial and fungal inocula used across AmpliAqua’s biological product lines. This person manages equipment readiness, sterile technique, batch execution, and harvesting logistics — keeping fermentation production reliable and on schedule.

Beyond the fermentation unit, this person is expected to be a full member of the AmpliAqua operations team — contributing to shared facility routines and coordinating with colleagues across RAS, bioponics, and microalgae as operational needs require.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain fermentation bioreactors and auxiliary equipment (pumps, aeration, temperature/agitation controls)

• Prepare culture media and materials for bacterial and fungal fermentation

• Execute inoculations, strain transfers, batch scale-up, and harvesting of bacterial/fungal biomass or inocula

• Monitor fermentation parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, agitation, cell/spore density) and flag deviations

• Support downstream processing: concentration, stabilization, packaging, and dispatch of inocula/biomass

• Contribute to shared facility tasks and support other production areas as needed

• Support internal trials and scale-up validations from an equipment/execution standpoint

What we are Looking for

Essential

• 4–5+ years of hands-on experience operating fermenters/bioreactors for bacterial and/or fungal production

• BSc or MSc (preferred) in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related fields

• Demonstrated ability to run fermentation operations independently

• Working knowledge of sensors, pumps, valves, and basic troubleshooting

• Availability for on-site work in Nazéré; driving license valued

• Experience supporting biostimulant, biofertilizer, or biocontrol product development

• Comfort moving across multiple production systems
